reckless love of robots

If you have left your bed today, chances are you have touched something whose manufacturing process was at least partly if not wholly executed by a robot. However, gone are the days when robots lived in the factories, for very soon they might not only be part of our working colleagues but also part of our families. A few years ago, people argued that a robot could never live like a human being because they could not think and lacked human intuition. However, the development of artificial intelligence has made this a thing of the past. Unlike in the last decade or so, today the million-dollar question is whether one could be friends with a robot or not. My reaction to this question is “why not?”
My idea of the future is that robots will integrate into the everyday life of human beings helping us with everyday chores like housework, cleaning of our homes and offices, serving us in coffee shops and going as far as providing security to name but a few. I believe that one of the biggest challenges of human beings is accepting change, but rather than dread it, at this moment in time it would be much better if we started coming up with ways on how we should smoothly slide into this certain future. If you haven’t realized it yet, the question is not whether we will be friends with these robots or whether we will accept them as part of our society but rather when we will admit that it is about time. Yes, with the help that they bring us, they will also render most of us unemployed, but I believe that this is in a way positive. The high unemployment rates that would be caused by these robots would push us to be more creative and develop new areas and fields that we have not yet explored.
Unlike humans, robots do not suffer from frailties of humanity like laziness, boredom, procrastination and of recent the chronical lack of concentration caused mainly by the continued checking of our mobile devices. Robots can not only do a better job in some given fields of production but are also capable of loving us more than we love ourselves. Just like a robot can be programmed to work continuously and diligently, a robot can most definitely be programmed to love unconditionally and limitlessly. A robot can without a doubt love us without being utterly concerned with the consequences of its actions regarding its comfort, safety and wellbeing. Its love unlike that of humans would not be crafty or slick, cunning or shrewd, in fact with all things considered it might also get quite shod like let alone some even suggesting it might get downright ridiculous.

Therefore, when I write the statement “the reckless love of robots,” I do not mean that robots themselves are reckless, but rather the way that they would be programmed to love us would be so. The idea that they are here to take over the world is only a mythical theme of science fiction movies which should not prevent us from having a robot as a friend. Welcoming robots and offering our love in return will most surely only make our world a better place.
